SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Cavan Fitzgerald to a standard, entry-level contract.
Fitzgerald, 19, currently leads all Halifax (QMJHL) defensemen in points, posting three goals and two assists in his first seven games this season. His three goals rank second on the team and T-3rd in the league (tied with fellow Sharks prospect Jeremy Roy) amongst defensemen. The second-year player is teammates on Halifax with Sharks 2015 draft pick Timo Meier.
In 2014-15, Fitzgerald posted 31 points (four goals, 27 assists) and a plus-4 rating in just 40 games as a rookie, leading all Halifax blueliners in points and ranking T-4th amongst all QMJHL rookie defensemen. He added 10 points (all assists) in 14 playoff games last season, again pacing team defensemen in scoring. His plus-7 rating in the playoffs led the team.
In 50 career QMJHL games with Halifax, Fitzgerald has posted 37 points (eight goals, 29 assists). He joined Halifax in 2013 as a try-out player after splitting time between the Cape Breton Tradesmen and the Summerside Western Capitals. Fitzgerald played his midget hockey in both the Nova Scotia and Boston regions.
The six-foot, 190-pound native of Boston, Massachusetts, attended the San Jose Sharks 2015 Training Camp as a tryout player.
