SAN JOSE, CA - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the club has signed defenseman Julius (YUL-ee-us) Bergman (@juliusbergman21) to a standard, entry-level contract.
"We were very pleased to select Julius in this year's draft," said Wilson. "He plays a solid two-way game and sees the play well. You can never have too many smooth skating defensemen, and we look forward to watching his development."
Bergman, the Sharks second-round selection (46th overall) in the 2014 NHL Draft, played for Frolunda in the Swedish Junior League during the 2013-14 season. Bergman recorded 34 points (13 goals, 21 assists) and 54 penalty minutes in 45 games with Frolunda's junior squad, ranking first on the team in goals, assists and points amongst defensemen. Among league blueliners, he ranked second in goals and tied for third in points. He was teammates with fellow Sharks draft pick (2013) goaltender Fredrik Bergvik.
The native of Stockholm, Sweden, represented his country in the 2013 World Junior U-18 Championship, registering one assist and four penalty minutes in five games. Bergman also represented Sweden's U-18 team at the 2013 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Cup, posting one assist and 12 penalty minutes in five tournament games.
The six-foot-one, 190-pound Bergman recently took part in the Sharks 2014 Training Camp and will play for the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League this season.
