Antti Suomela has been selected as 'Sharks Prospect of the Week' for the week of Nov. 11, after posting five points (three goals, two assists), along with a plus-five rating in three games for the San Jose Barracuda, San Jose's top development affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL).
Suomela, 25, logged his first career AHL multi-goal game on Nov. 13 against the San Diego Gulls. Over 11 games played this season, he has now collected seven points (four goals, three assists) with a plus-three rating and is tied for second on the team in goals.
Last season, Suomela split the year between the Sharks and Barracuda, recording eight points (three goals, five assists) and a plus-one rating over 27 games in the NHL, and 20 points (six goals, 14 assists) over 47 games in the AHL. He led all Sharks rookies in goals and ranked second in points and assists, while also adding an assist in two Calder Cup Playoff games for the Barracuda.
During the 2017-18 campaign, Suomela spent time overseas leading Liiga, Finland's top professional league, in scoring. He registered 60 points (21 goals, 39 assists) over 59 games played with JYP Jyväskylä, and ranked second in the league in plus/minus with a plus-28 rating. The Liiga All-Star led his team in points, assists, plus/minus, and game-winning goals (six, tied for second in the league). He added three goals and three assists in 12 tournament games as well, helping JYP win the 2018 Champions Hockey League.
The six-foot, 180-pound centerman from Espoo, Finland was originally signed by San Jose as a free agent on June 6, 2018.
