The Sharks Fan Development Department, in conjunction with NHL Street, is excited to announce another season of Sharks & Parks, a street hockey program designed to introduce hockey to youth in a fun and safe environment.
Sharks standout defenseman Scott Hannan will enter his third year of captaincy of Sharks & Parks. As the official spokesperson of the program, Hannan will make appearances, provide valuable hockey tips and most importantly, serve as a positive role model for participating kids.
Started in 1991, Sharks & Parks has reached thousands of kids by donating street hockey equipment and instructional material to schools and community centers throughout Northern California. The program was so successful that the NHL adopted it as a league-wide initiative the following year with 33 programs run by various NHL and American Hockey League (AHL) teams throughout the United States and Canada.
Sharks & Parks typically starts in October, coinciding with the beginning of the Sharks season and culminates in a street hockey tournament held at HP Pavilion in the spring. In addition, plans are underway for hockey clinics throughout the year, including a free ice hockey clinic at Logitech Ice at San Jose and Sharks Ice at Fremont, and a free roller hockey clinic at Rollin' Ice, a roller hockey facility owned by Sharks alum David Maley.
