Sharks Obtain 3rd Rounder For Dimitrakos

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
Doug Wilson acquired Ville Nieminen on Wednesday in exchange for a 2006 third-round pick. The Sharks top hockey executive made another move Thursday just prior to the trade deadline when he moved Niko Dimitrakos to Philadelphia for a 2006 third-round pick.

Dimitrakos played nice for the Sharks in the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs, but it wasn’t working during this campaign.

“Maybe the change will be good for Niko,” said Wilson. “We wish him the best. Maybe this will spark him to the next step in his play.”

Nieminen may have been acquired the day prior to the deadline, but there is no question he will benefit the Sharks starting tonight with Edmonton.

“He gives you the juice and energy,” said Wilson. “I think he will help us in a unique way. We need to perform with a swagger and maybe he can help flip the switch. There is a reason he has gone deep in the playoffs.”

If he was looking to just make a deal, there could have been more available to Wilson, but he wasn’t about to make a trade that didn’t provide short and long term benefits.

“I believe in this team,” said Wilson. “We’re at our most important stretch of the season and there is no time to deal for someone who is banged up and wait for them to get healthy.”

SCHAEFER UP
Nolan Schaefer is expected to be in San Jose for Thursday night’s contest to back up Vesa Toskala. Nabokov will be rested as precautionary measure after taking a hard shot to his upper body during the final play of the game at Anaheim.

PARKER READY
Scott Parker has been activated and could see action against Edmonton Thursday evening.
