On Sunday July 13, Sharks Ice employees, along with San Jose Jr. Sharks volunteered their time for the 2008 San Jose LIVESTRONG Challenge. Power Stop #2, located at the Almaden Community Library, became Sharks Territory, complete with the Sharks Ice Cream Truck, street banners, and Sharks Territory signs covering the area. Nearly 3,000 participants walked, ran, and biked the courses.
The Sharks volunteers supported riders on the 65 and 100 mile courses. Water, Gatorade, fruit, sandwiches, and other snacks were available for the riders who wanted them. In addition to nutritional nourishment, the Ice Cream truck was also a popular stop for riders, volunteers, and spectators. With a medical unit and a bike mechanic on site, the Power Stops took care of all the bikers’ needs along the route.
Lance Armstrong and his elite entourage rode the 100 mile course, leading the pack for the rest of the entrants. Participants had to raise a minimum of $250 each, contributing to $1.5 million raised in San Jose.
The LIVESTRONG Challenge is the Lance Armstrong Foundation’s signature fundraising event inspired by hope, courage and the perseverance of Lance and the nearly 12 million Americans affected by cancer.
