Sharks Host Ultimate Fantasy Hockey Playoffs

by San Jose Sharks Staff / San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks partnered once again with the Foundation Fighting Blindness to host the annual Ultimate Fantasy Hockey Playoffs draft and dinner at the Grill at HP Pavilion on April 7th. This year, over $23,000.00 was raised in order to help fight retinal degenerative diseases, including proceeds from an exclusive silent auction which featured autographed items from Sharks players.

Sharks radio play-by-play broadcaster Dan Rusanowsky and local attorney Linda MacLeod are local co-chairs of this annual event, which simulates conditions of the NHL Draft. After determining the draft order, each team selects players from participating Stanley Cup playoff teams and builds their own fantasy franchise. Statistics for each team are tabulated among the multiple NHL cities participating, and the overall winner is presented with the Gund Cup, named for Foundation founder Gordon Gund.

Last year’s San Jose Division produced the Gund Cup winner, the “Ice Doctors,” captained by Mark Fredkin. The team was officially presented with the San Jose Division Trophy and the Gund Cup by Sharks President and CEO Greg Jamison at the start of this season’s event.

Rusanowsky, who also serves as emcee and Commissioner of the Draft, was joined by Sharks color commentators Jamie Baker (radio) and Drew Remenda (television), who provided some expert scouting reports to several teams.

“I’d like to thank all of the community leaders who helped benefit an outstanding cause by putting together their teams,” says Rusanowsky, who calls the action on 98.5 KFOX and the Sharks Radio Network. “The Sharks Organization and the entire Aramark staff are most appreciated for their assistance. I’d especially like to thank our fantastic chef, Craig Coe and his staff at the Grill, who put together a wonderful meal for us and made it a memorable night.”

As the second round of the 2008 playoffs ended, another San Jose Division team, The Avengers, holds the first place overall standing in the battle for this year’s Gund Cup. Four San Jose Division teams, including the defending champion Ice Doctors, are currently in the top 20 of this year’s competition:
