Sharks Honor First Responders from Gilroy Garlic Festival Tragedy

Sharks Foundation Donates more than $45,000 to #GilroyStrong Fundraising Efforts

SAN JOSE, CA - Tonight, in a special ceremony prior to their game vs. the Anaheim Ducks, the San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) and the Sharks Foundation (@SharksCare) honored the first responders who assisted in the care and well-being of those in attendance and those wounded during the Gilroy Garlic Festival shooting which took place last July 28.   

The ceremony, which included a rendition of the National Anthem sung by the Gilroy High School Chamber Choir, acknowledged the individuals who put themselves in harm's way to ensure the safety of those in attendance at the festival. The honorees included:

  • Chief Scot Smithee
  • Detective Eric Cryar
  • Officer Hugo Delmoral
  • Detective Robert Basuino 
  • Officer Mark Tarasco
  • PSC Marisa Huntley
  • PSC Monica Beltran
  • Engineer Paramedic Steven Hayes II
  • Acting Captain Paramedic Daniel Lozano 
  • Operations Supervisor Paramedic Robert Guerrero 

Other highlights from the evening included:

  • Sharks players wearing black "Gilroy Strong" jerseys during warm-ups as well as trucker baseball hats representing both the Gilroy Police Department and Gilroy Fire Department. The jerseys were later gifted to the hosted first responders.  
  • The Sharks locker room doors being opened by Probationary Firefighter Paramedic Brendon McDonagh and Gilroy Police Officer Doug Remmick to bring the team onto the ice at the start of the game.  
  • Sharks coaches and broadcasters wearing lapel pins representing the Gilroy Fire Department throughout the night.  

Later in the evening, the Sharks Foundation presented a check for $45,867.11 to the #GilroyStrong fundraising efforts. These funds were raised through various organizational efforts which included the Sharks Foundation's Emergency Aid Funding, the Gilroy Strong Player Fundraiser which saw Sharks players host a VIP dinner and autograph session in Gilroy last September, San Jose Barracuda (@sjbarracuda) Chuck-A-Puck proceeds from December, the San Jose Barracuda Gilroy Strong Custom Jersey Auction from December, and the Sharks Foundation's 50/50 Raffle presented by Black Oak Casino Resort from last night.
