From boxes of macaroni and cheese to canned soups, people arrived with grocery bags full of items to donate to Second Harvest Food Bank at the Sharks Foundation’s food drive kickoff event at Sharks Ice at San Jose. A line of fans clad in teal stretched across the room while they chatted cheerfully amongst each other as they waited to meet their favorite Sharks celebrities. The positive atmosphere lingered through the evening as Sharks alumni interacted with fans, signed memorabilia, and thanked them for donating.
Fans who donated at least five cans or $5 were able to meet Sharks alumni Owen Nolan, Mike Ricci, Curtis Brown, Jamie Baker, as well as General Manager Doug Wilson, broadcasters Randy Hahn and Dan Rusanowsky, and mascot S.J. Sharkie.
“It’s great that we’re able to raise money and food for people who need it and at the same time we get to interact with the fans,” Sharks alumni Owen Nolan said.
“As players and as an organization we always try to give back and help as much as we can,” former Sharks Captain and current Developmental Coach Mike Ricci said. “Second Harvest Food Bank is a great organization and for the fans to come out and donate to the cause is great.”
In the end, over 200 people attended the event, and their generous donations filled four large food collection barrels and raised over $550. This will provide roughly 1,500 meals to those in need this holiday season.
“We appreciate our fans so much and the dedication they have for the team and the Sharks Foundation,” Sharks Foundation representative Sammy Riley stated. “It was wonderful to see that so many of them came out and contributed to Second Harvest Food Bank.”
If you couldn’t make it to the kick-off event on Thursday, there are still plenty of other ways to help! Donations will be accepted at the Sharks Store and at the South Entrance of HP Pavilion during normal business hours until the end of the month.
