ASAS reinforces the knowledge and skills needed for in-school success and also promotes positive relationships among children and adults. In addition to providing tutoring services, ASAS creates an engaging environment for children to interact with each other and provides opportunities for children to make decisions and learn leadership skills.

In a letter to Faas, California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said, “Over the past 10 years, your leadership has enabled this organization to touch the lives of many people in the San Jose area. Not only have you helped secure the support necessary for the operation of the After-School All-Stars, but your positive influence has been a source of inspiration to all those around you. I congratulate you on receiving the 2006 Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award.”

The Beacon of Light Award is presented in remembrance of Mary Angela DiGiovanni, daughter of HUMMER General Manager Mike DiGiovanni, who was tragically involved in a fatal car accident on Jan. 5, 2003. The After-School All-Stars honor Mary’s spirit of service and hope for the future with the Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award.
