The 2021 Sharks BAAST scholarship recipient is Trenton Jiang from Leland High School in San Jose. As the BAASST scholarship recipient, Jiang received $5,000. However, as the presenting partner on the program, Chegg has matched the scholarship amount to provide him with a $10,000 total college scholarship where he will study Biology on a pre-med track in the fall. In addition to being an outstanding student, Trenton teamed-up with his sister early on during the COVID-19 pandemic to give back to the community by starting an organization called Mask-ER-Aid which makes and delivers Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to local hospitals. In the first five months of the pandemic, Mask-ER-Aid provided more than 4,800 pieces of PPE to Bay Area hospitals.

"As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year's BAASST scholarship applicant pool demonstrated a level of determination, resiliency, and success like we have never seen before," said Stephanie Dubin, Sharks Community Relations Program Manager. "Our 2020-21 BAASST scholarship recipient Trenton, along with the three Sharks and Chegg Community Student Award winners, all notably took time to give back, providing relief to various areas within their communities that were the most severely impacted. The San Jose Sharks are thankful to Chegg for their partnership and generosity in helping four deserving students reach their goals of higher education."
"As a student-first company, Chegg knows the challenges students are facing. With a pandemic - and the resultant financial crisis - uprooting their education and plans, it has never been more important to champion their achievements and give them a voice" says Lila Thomas, Director of Social Impact and Head of Chegg.org." We are proud to partner with the San Jose Sharks on the BAAST Scholarship and Community Award to celebrate four phenomenal students who have achieved so much while giving back to the community during an unprecedented year. We are also delighted to partner with the Varkey Foundation on the Global Student Prize. These initiatives make a tangible impact by celebrating and empowering students at a local and international level. After all, it is their dreams, their insights, and their creativity that will light the way to a brighter future."
