by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks and After-School All-Stars announced today that Sharks Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Charlie Faas is the recipient of the Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award for 2006. The award is presented on behalf of the National Board of Directors of the After-School All-Stars program for outstanding contributions by an individual.

Faas, who was the founding President for the Greater San Jose chapter of After-School All-Stars and who formerly served as the director of the program, has been an active member of After-School All-Stars since its inception in 1997.
“Charlie is the synthesis of our mission in human form,” said John Poch, current Executive Director for ASAS Greater San Jose. “He has made an investment in every child we have.”

After-School All-Stars (ASAS) is an after school program that emphasizes fun-activity based learning, serving over 35,000 children in 15 cites across the nation. ASAS reinforces the knowledge and skills needed for in-school success and also promotes positive relationships among children and adults. In addition to providing tutoring services, ASAS creates an engaging environment for children to interact with each other and provides opportunities for children to make decisions and learn leadership skills.

“Over the past ten years, your leadership has enabled this organization to touch the lives of many people in the San Jose area,” said Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger in a letter to Faas. “Not only have you helped secure the support necessary for the operation of the After-School All-Stars, but your positive influence has been a source of inspiration to all those around you. I congratulate you on receiving the 2006 Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award.”

The Beacon of Light Award is presented in remembrance of Mary Angela DiGiovanni, daughter of HUMMER General Manager Mike DiGiovanni, who was tragically involved in a fatal car accident on January 5, 2003. The After-School All-Stars honor Mary’s spirit of service and hope for the future with the Mary Angela DiGiovanni Beacon of Light Award.

The award will be presented to Faas this Sunday, May 21, 2006 at the 5th Annual Celebration of the After-School All-Stars at Corde Valle Golf Club. This year’s event will include a Bocce Social, Wine Tasting, Live and Silent Auctions, VIP Hold ‘Em Tournament and golf at the Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed golf course and spa.
