The San Jose Sharks/Vancouver Canucks game at 5 p.m. on Jan. 2 will serve as the first NHL broadcast on the new national network. Beginning that day and moving forward, VERSUS, which has served as the NHL’s national television partner in the United States since 2005, will be rebranded as NBC Sports Network.
Reaching more than 75 million homes, NBC Sports Network will serve fans by sharing NBC's rich heritage of unmatched storytelling, best-in-class production and ability to use broad promotion to make big events bigger. The network will air the NHL, Major League Soccer, IZOD IndyCar Series, college football and basketball from top-ranked schools, the Tour de France, horse racing surrounding the Triple Crown, and programming surrounding NBC's biggest events such as the Super Bowl and Olympics.
The new 24/7 network will also offer original programming that exemplifies NBC Sports' ability to tell stories and provide meaningful and relevant content such as NFL Turning Point, NBC SportsTalk and the newly announced monthly interview shows and quarterly town halls with 22-time Emmy Award-winner Bob Costas. The town halls will tackle the prominent issues that continually emerge in today's sports. The first in the series, Costas Tonight: Live from the Super Bowl, will feature some of the NFL's biggest stars and newsmakers focusing on the state of the NFL, plus a preview of Super Bowl XLVI and the storylines from the NFL season.
