San Jose Sharks Support 'Pat's Run'

by San Jose Sharks Staff / San Jose Sharks
SAN JOSE, Calif. -- The San Jose Sharks are proud to help support the third annual Pat’s Run to be held Saturday, May 3, 2008 to celebrate the life of scholar-athlete, U.S. Army Ranger and San Jose native, Pat Tillman.

The 4.2 mile run / walk will begin at 8 a.m. at San Jose’s Leland High School (6677 Camden Ave. San Jose, CA 95120) and finish on the 42-yard line of Pat Tillman Stadium on the school’s campus. Tillman wore jersey number “42” during his high school football career at Leland as well as during his college career at Arizona State University. All proceeds from Pat’s Run will benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation, a nonprofit organization that carries forward Tillman’s legacy through a unique and competitive leadership program.

“We as an organization are thrilled to be a part of such a worthy cause,” says Joe Thornton, Sharks alternate captain. “Pat Tillman sacrificed a high-profile lifestyle to fight for what he believed in and the Sharks and the city of San Jose are honored to be able to help support his legacy as well as Pat Tillman Foundation.”

The Pat Tillman Foundation’s flagship program, Leadership Through Action™ engages the leadership skills of carefully selected “Tillman Scholars.” The program guides the students to identify their passions and develop concrete solutions to society’s problems. The money raised at Pat’s Run will directly benefit students from the greater San Jose area who are selected to become Tillman Scholars.

The 2007 Pat’s Run in San Jose drew nearly 5,000 people and participants of all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to participate as a way to celebrate the tremendous impact Tillman’s life had on others.

An additional Pat’s Run event enters its fourth year on campus at Arizona State University, where Tillman starred as a student-athlete during his collegiate career with the Sun Devils and also played for the Arizona Cardinals of the National Football League after graduating with honors from ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business in 1997. This past April’s Pat’s Run in Tempe featured a record 15,000 runners and walkers.

Participants can register for Pat’s Run online at through May 1, while walk-up registration will begin on May 2 from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. and on race day morning from 6 a.m. – 7:45 a.m. at the Via Valiente registration desk at Leland High School.
