Halbgewachs, 23, recorded 35 points (19 goals, 16 assists), 18 penalty minutes and four game-winning goals in 55 games during the 2019-20 season with the San Jose Barracuda (@sjbarracuda), the Sharks top American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate. He set career highs in goals, points (tied), game-winning goals and shots on goal (115), despite the coronavirus pandemic-shortened season. Halbgewachs led the Barracuda in goals, game-winning goals (tied) and overtime goals (3, tied for AHL lead) and ranked second on the team in points. In his final 13 games before the stoppage, he posted five goals and six assists.
Halbgewachs has registered 70 points (32 goals, 38 assists) and seven game-winning goals in 119 career AHL games, all with San Jose. He has added one goal and one assist, including a game-winner, in four Calder Cup Playoff games (all in 2019). He ranks tied for fifth in goals on the Barracuda all-time scoring list, and 10th in points for the franchise.
Prior to turning pro, Halbgewachs recorded 280 points (139 goals, 141 assists) in 276 career WHL games with Moose Jaw, and has added another 26 points (14 goals, 12 assists) in 31 career WHL playoff games. In his final WHL season (2017-18), he became the first player to score 70 goals in the WHL since Pavel Brendl (1998-99), he led the WHL in goals, power-play goals (27), points (129) and GWG (11), earned the CHL Top Scorer Award and Bobby Clarke Trophy, was named to WHL East First All-Star Team and his career point total finished fourth all-time among Moose Jaw skaters. In addition, he helped Moose Jaw earn the 2017-18 Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy (WHL Regular Season Champion). Internationally, Halbgewachs played for Canada Western U-17 at the 2014 World Hockey Challenge.
The five-foot-eight, 165-pound forward is a native of Emerald Park, Saskatchewan, and was originally signed by San Jose as a free agent on Dec. 28, 2017.
