Q&A With Captain Patrick Marleau

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
SJSHARKS.com: What can you take from the first nine games?

Patrick Marleau: I think we’ve still got a lot of room to grow.  The two losses both had lessons to be learned.  We’re looking good and will get better moving forward.

SJSHARKS.com: What are the biggest surprises to you so far in the season?

Patrick Marleau: I wouldn’t call it a surprise, but the feeling the team had going into the season.  Everyone is expecting to win and it is a fun atmosphere.  Everyone has their job an a role to do. (Marc-Edouard) Vlasic has been a big surprise though.

SJSHARKS.com: What about Milan Michalek leading the team in goals?

Patrick Marleau: I remember last year saying he and (Steve) Bernier could be really good.  Last year they had some growing pains, but this year they’re showing no signs of slowing down.

SJSHARKS.com: What about having a defenseman contributing offensively like Matt Carle has?

Patrick Marleau: Matt has stepped up his game even more than last year.  Matt can take it to another level still and so can I and a lot of other players.

SJSHARKS.com: How much confidence does the club have in each netminder?

Patrick Marleau: Right now they’re alternating games and everybody has accepted it.  We’re winning and they guys are playing hard for whoever is in net and they are playing hard for us.

SJSHARKS.com: The team has three shutouts in nine games.  How strong has the overall team defense been?

Patrick Marleau: Everybody’s been great.  The D-men have been unbelievable at blocking shots and everyone is taking a lot of pride.  The forwards have been better in our own zone.  It has been a team effort so far.

SJSHARKS.com: What is the area that needs the most attention with regards to improvements?

Patrick Marleau: We can improve everywhere, but we can still apply more backside pressure to help the defense a little more.
