Fight Night at the Tank returns to HP Pavilion for its season finale on Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. Headlining the card will be 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist and Bay Area boxing legend Andre Ward (9-0, 5 KO’s). Ward last fought at The Tank in August as part of the “Best Damn Night of Olympians,” a boxing event televised nationally on Fox Sports Net where he scored a third round TKO over opponent Christopher Holt. Ward’s opponent and the remainder of the under card will be announced shortly.
Individual tickets to the Nov.16 edition of Fight Night at the Tank are on sale now at the HP Pavilion Ticket Office, Ticketmaster Ticket Centers located in Wherehouse Music stores, Tower Records and Ritmo Latino locations throughout the Bay Area, online at ticketmaster.com, or charge by phone at 408-998-TIXS, 415-421-TIXS or 510-625-TIXS.
Ward’s most recent victory came at the hands of Andy Kolle (10-1, 8 KO’s) when the two fought this past April in Mashantucket, Conn. Ward earned his ninth victory by scoring a six-round technical decision.
A two-time national champion, Ward became the first American light heavyweight to capture Olympic gold since Andrew Maynard in 1988. He joined an exclusive group of light heavyweight American boxers to medal in the Olympics. This group includes Muhammad Ali (gold as Cassius Clay in 1960), Leon Spinks (gold in 1976) and Evander Holyfield (bronze in 1984).
Ward is a strong, mobile counter-puncher with a powerful jab. He was the 2003 Titan Games Champion, 2003 Everlast National Champion and the 2002 Everlast Fran Jones Under-19 National Champion. Ward is a native of Oakland and is trained by his godfather, Virgil Hunter, out of the famed King’s Gym.
