Each week, NORCAL Hockey selects three teams, players, coaches or volunteers as their Three Stars of the Week. Winners will be featured during an intermission report on an FSN Bay Area telecast during a Sharks game and on SJSHARKS.com. Here are this week’s winners.
Alexander Stoley can do it all! This five year veteran of competitive youth hockey teams has many times been called upon to play multiple positions, including goaltender. Late last summer, the Tri Valley Blue Devil member decided to take it a step further and become a certified ice hockey official. Alex completed the numerous USA hockey requirements and was able to serve as a linesman for several northern California youth hockey games. More recently, Alexander was given the opportunity to serve as a referee. He was a bit nervous at the beginning but ended up displaying the same level of control and consistency that he shows when he has a stick in his hands. In addition to looking forward to serving this most important role, he can also be seen stopping by the mailbox as he looks for his monthly paycheck.
San Jose Jr. Sharks Midget 18AA Team
Congratulations to the San Jose Jr. Sharks Midget AA team! During the weekend of Mar. 1-4, the boys who are coached by Justin Alonzo, won the Pacific District Championship. The Jr. Sharks played teams from Washington, Oregon, and California and had a convincing 7-2 win over the Whatcom Warriors last Thursday. The Jr. Sharks next battled it out with the Portland Jr. Hawks, who gave our midget 18AA team a ride, but in the end it was the Jr. Sharks on top again, 2-0. Saturday morning had the Jr. Sharks winning 9-2 over the Seattle Admirals and Saturday afternoon was the Semifinals as the Jr. Sharks once again faced off against the Hawks. The Hawks jumped out to a convincing 4-1 lead after the second intermission but the Jr. Sharks came roaring back, scoring 6 unanswered goals and defeating the Hawks 7-4. The win put the Jr. Sharks into the finals against the Ventura Mariners. The Jr. Sharks won 5-2 to take the championship. The Jr. Sharks finished with a 46-14-6 record and are looking forward to moving on to Nationals where they can show the folks back east the Californians can really play hockey. Way to go Jr. Sharks!!!
California Cougars Mite Team
The California Cougars’ Mite team has demonstrated that hard work and perseverance pays offs. This dedicated group of kids, parents and coaches endured the previous two seasons where they were frequently on the wrong end of 20 + goal losses. However this year has been different. After going undefeated in this year’s league play, they concluded their season by winning all of their games at the NORCAL Mite Jamboree. The San Jose Sharks commend the Cougars continuous dedication to their team and the California Cougars program.
