Each week, NORCAL Hockey selects three teams, players, coaches or volunteers as their Three Stars of the Week. Winners will be featured during an intermission report on an FSN Bay Area telecast during a Sharks game and on SJSHARKS.com. Here are this week’s winners.
As the captain of the Santa Rosa Flyers PeeWee B Team, Kurtis Klinger’s passion for the game was on display two Saturdays ago when he collected six points (5-1=6) in a victory over the San Francisco SaberCats. Klinger’s display of offensive skill was complimented by his strong defensive play in his own zone.
However, Klinger’s most impressive hockey accomplishment to date did not come in the heat of battle. A Flyers board member was observing a public skating session in Santa Rosa recently and witnessed Klinger stopping to assist a young, physically-challenged child. Klinger demonstrated some skating fundamentals for the youngster and did so with a tremendous amount of patience and care. Klinger’s character off-ice combined with his performance on-ice made him one of this week’s NORCAL Three Stars.
Serving as an adult volunteer for the Fresno Junior Hockey Club, Nicole Buck has been an integral part in growing the game of hockey in the Central Valley for the past several years. A familiar face at the rink, Buck is intimately involved in nearly every aspect of the club.
As the Team Manager for FJHC’s Squirt and Midget 16U Southwest teams, Buck is responsible for team administrative duties as well as travel requirements for venues ranging from the Bay Area to Salta Lake City. In addition to her Team Manager and administrative travel responsibilities, Buck also serves as the Vice President of the Club’s Board of Directors. Buck’s overwhelming dedication and organization to the game of hockey made her one of this week’s NORCAL Three Stars.
Jr. Sharks Squirt B Team
After winning the Regional Silver Sticks Tournament over the Thanksgiving Break this past November, the Jr. Sharks Squirt B Team advanced to the International Silver Stick Finals in Canada, hosted this year in Pelham, Ontario.
The team made NORCAL and California Hockey history last week by winning the North American Squirt/Atom Tier II Championship, finishing the tournament with a 4-2 record. They became the first team from California in Silver Sticks history to win the finals. The team’s name will be enshrined on a plaque along with all Silver Stick winners past and present, at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. Their landmark victory in the Silver Stick Finals made the Jr. Sharks Squirt B Team one of this week’s NORCAL Three Stars.
