SAN JOSE, California - The San Jose Sharks announced today that goaltender Antti Niemi has been selected as the Brocade "Sharks Player of the Year" for 2012-13 in a vote by the Bay Area media.
The Brocade "Sharks Player of the Year" award is given to the player contributing most to the success of the Sharks in the 2012-13 regular season. The award will be presented prior to tonight's game against the Dallas Stars at HP Pavilion at San Jose.
Entering play tonight, Niemi is tied for first in the NHL in wins (23), T-7th in save percentage, T-10th in goals-against average (2.14) and T-4th in shutouts (4).
He posted a seven-game winning streak March 30 thru April 5, one-game shy of his career-high and also won six consecutive starts from Jan. 20 thru Jan. 31.
Niemi was named the Brocade "Sharks Player of the Month" for Jan/Feb. 2013 when he was is 3rd in the NHL in goals-against average (1.83), 4th in save percentage (.934), and T-6th in wins (9). He allowed two or less goals in 12 of his 17 games during that span.
The native of Vantaa, Finland was also the recipient of the Brocade "Sharks Player of the Year" award in 2010-11, making him the fourth player in franchise history to win the award at least twice.
