SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that defenseman Mirco Mueller (@muellermirco) will play for Team Switzerland in the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championships to be held in Toronto and Montreal beginning on Dec. 26.
Mueller, 19, has appeared in 24 games with San Jose this season, posting three points (one goal, two assists) and eight penalty minutes. He leads all NHL rookies in blocked shots (38) and is fourth overall on the Sharks.
"This is a great honor and opportunity for Mirco to represent his country," said Wilson. "As an important young player to our franchise for now and the future, we think this experience will provide a positive impact on his career moving forward."
"We have been very pleased with what Mirco has added to our group this season but this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for him to represent his country and compete against the top peers in his age group," said Head Coach Todd McLellan. "We look forward to him returning to the club after the conclusion of the tournament."
The six-foot-three, 205-pound rearguard was drafted by San Jose in the first round (18th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft.
