On December 15, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., Sharks Ice will host a special Oakland Mayor’s Toy Drive skate at the Oakland Ice Center. Joining us for this special event will be San Jose Sharks player, Torrey Mitchell, who will be signing autographs for the first 100 people to donate a new, unwrapped, non-violent toy in excellent condition. Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums and Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan are also scheduled to attend.
Everyone who brings an appropriate toy to donate will receive a free admission and skate rental for the skate. All others are welcome to join us to skate for our regular admissions fee.
The Oakland Mayor’s Community Toy Drive has been serving Oakland’s low income residents for over fifteen years, bringing joy for children on Christmas morning through the generous donations of toys and financial donations. Last year, the Toy Drive provided toys for over 9,000 Oakland children, almost 3,000 more than the prior year. At the same time, donations have decreased. “Unfortunately we start this year in a deficit,” said Al Lujan of the Mayor’s Office, “But we will prevail and every child will have a toy on Christmas morning.” Sharks Ice is partnering with the Mayor’s office to ensure that this promise to the City’s neediest children is honored.
A Mayor’s Toy Drive donation barrel will be available in the Oakland Ice Center lobby, at 519 18th Street, throughout the holiday season for donations.
