The San Jose Sharks shutout the Los Angeles Kings 1-0 on Jan. 1, 2011. Devin Setoguchi scores the game's only goal late in the second period on his 24th birthday. Antti Niemi is a perfect 29-for-29 on saves in Team Teal's first game of the new year.


Antti Niemi and the Sharks hang on shutout the Kings 1-0.

Ryane Clowe skates into the offensive zone and knocks the puck towards the end from a rather difficult angle. The puck hits the post however.

Jonathan Quick leaves is net as Antti Niemi makes the save and will take the faceoff to his left.

Ryane Clowe dumps the puck behind Jonathan Quick and works the corner to burn up the Kings' precious seconds.

A Sharks takeaway in the neutral zone, leads to a rush but Jonathan Quickly easily makes the save and knocks it safely into the corner.

Defenseman Jack Johnson's shot on goal is blocked by Antti Niemi as Johnson tries to tie up the game. Sharks stil lead 1-0.

Dany Heatley takes the faceoff and wins it over Anze Kopitar. Sharks own the smallest of margin in the faceoff circle -- winning 25 to the Kings' 24.

Jason Demers' shot on goal is foiled by Jonathan Quick.

Scott Nichol barely misses knocking the puck into the open net after Jonathan Quick is caught out of position.

Logan Couture and Ryane Clowe crash the net and try to stuff both the puck and Jonathan Quick into the net but the Kings' netminder holds his ground.

Antti Niemi is quick to cover up the puck in his crease and not allow any second chances. The ensuing faceoff will be to his right.

Scott Nichol wins the faceoff in the defensive zone.

Logan Couture fires the first shot of the final period. Jonathan Quick makes the routine save.


A late goal from Devin Setoguchi, who is celebrating his 24th birthday today, gives the Sharks a 1-0 lead. Despite LA's lead in the shots on goal, they have 21 shots, they find themselves down heading into the second intermission. The Kings own a slight lead in the faceoff circle, winning 20 compared to San Jose's 18.

Devin Setoguchi scores the first goal of new year to give the Sharks a 1-0 edge. Setoguchi and Joe Thornton enter the offensive zone together, Thornton skates toward the board drawing two defenders to him and frees up enough space for Seto's slapshot. Kent Huskins and Marc-Edouard Vlasic earn the assists.

Jarret Stoll's shot is block and goes into the netting for a stoppage.

After Logan Couture wins the faceoff, Ryane Clowe shoot toward Jonanthan Quick but Clowe's shot narrowly misses.

San Jose gets an icing call against them. LA wins the ensuing offensive zone faceoff.

Antti Niemi makes the pad save but the Kings continue to crash the net and dislodge the net from its moorings

Antti Niemi snags the puck out air with his glove and will take the faceoff to his left.

Dan Boyle blocks a shot to help out his netminder

San Jose successfully kill off the penalty as Dany Heatley starts a rush up the ice. Additionally, some how a Wayne Simmonds' stick ends up flying over the glass and into the crowd. No fans appear injuried on that wacky incident.

A big slapshot from the point, but Antti Niemi makes the save and does not give up a rebound.

Ryane Clowe gets tag with a delay of game penalty for putting the puck over the net.

Kent Huskins, out of the penalty box, receives a Marc-Edouard Vlasic stretch pass and goes on a breakaway. Huskins gets a quality shot on Jonathan Quick who makes the save.

The Kings will get to play out the remainder of their powerplay on fresh ice.


After one period, the game remains tied at 0-0. Each team has 13 hits, Kings have nine shots San Jose has five, the Sharks have won 11 of 19 faceoff. Drew Doughty leads all skaters with 9:01 of ice time.

A lot of traffic in front of Antti Niemi but his defense collapes around him and clear the puck form the crease. However, Kent Huskins goes to the penalty box for interference.

Patrick Marleau gets a breakaway but misses the net.

Jamie McGinn goes to the penalty box for tripping. The Kings will get their first powerplay.

Marco Sturm leads an odd-man rush but Antti Niemi makes a routine save.

Jonathan Quick makes a nifty save on Joe Thornton's shot.

Logan Couture waits to the side of Jonathan Quick who rapidly slides across his crease and makes the save on Couture's shot. Kings call time out.

LA wins the denfensive zone faceoff, but Drew Doughty clears the puck over the glass and gets slap with a two-minute delay of game penalty. The Sharks will get a five-on-three man advantage.

Kings' Captain Dustin Brown goes off for hooking. San Jose will get their first powerplay of the game.

Brandon Mashinter shoots but misses high. However, the puck sharply bounces back near Jonathan Quick's net. Patrick Marleau collects the puck, but Quick was fast to cover up the open net.

The Kings' Drew Doughty's slap shot from the point knocks Antti Niemi's stick out of his hands but Niemi still makes the save.

Kings are earning a lot of zone time in the last few minutes as the Sharks are scrambling to clear the puck.

Kings' Brad Richardson has a open shot at Antti Niemi who makes the tough save.

Jamie McGinn gets the first shot on goal on LA netminder Jonathan Quick.

Los Angeles wins the game's opening faceoff.


The San Jose Sharks will start the new year in Los Angeles taking on the Kings tonight.

Antti Niemi will start in net for second consecutive game. He led the Sharks to a 5-3 lead over his former team, the Chicago Blackhawks, Thursday night.

Joe Pavelski and Torrey Mitchell will not be in the lineup tonight. Pavs' last game was against the Kings on Dec. 27 and Mitchell has not played sinced Dec. 23 vs Phoenix Coyotes.
