The San Jose Jr. Sharks Girls U-16 team was eliminated from the USA Hockey Girls’ National Championships today after falling 5-2 to the California Selects at Logitech Ice at San Jose.
The Jr. Sharks Pee-Wee AA team defeated the number 2 seeded Niagara Jr. Purple Eagles this morning by a score of 3-2 in 3OT to advance to the semi-finals. They will play Affton American today at 5:00pm (EDT) in Buffalo for a chance to advance to the finals.
The Jr. Sharks Girls started off the game with three consecutive penalties, with the last one resulting in a Cal goal at 9:52 in the first period. The score would remain the same until 5:27 in the second period, when Cal scored once again. Just one minute and 17 seconds later, Cal made it 3-0. Despite a 5-on-3 power play for one minute and 43 seconds, the Jr. Sharks could not notch a goal, and headed to the locker room down 3-0.
The Jr. Sharks Girls continued to struggle as Cal scored just 46 seconds into the third period to make it 4-0, but they weren’t ready to give up. The Jr. Sharks forged a comeback, scoring twice in three minutes and five seconds to make it a 4-2 game with just over four minutes remaining.
In an attempt to close the gap even more, the Jr. Sharks Girls pulled their goalie for an extra attacker. It was Cal, however, that got the goal. An empty net goal at 14:26 sealed the game for Cal as they ended up beating the Jr. Sharks 5-2.
