The San Jose Sharks announced today that center Joe Thornton has been selected as the Seagate Technology “Sharks Player of the Month” for January. The award will be presented prior to the Sharks game against the Minnesota Wild tonight.
Thornton posted at least one point in eight of the Sharks 12 games during the month, helping lead the team to a 7-4-2 record. Overall, Thornton posted 14 points (3-11=14), including three multiple-point games while posting a +7 rating. He opened the month notching four points (1-3=4) in a 6-3 win over Columbus on Jan. 5
Entering play today, Thornton leads all NHL players with 54 assists and his 71 points (17-54=71) are second only to Jaromir Jagr (33-43=76), who has played four more games.
Established in the 1996-97 season, the Seagate Technology “Sharks Player of the Month” program honors the Sharks player(s) who have contributed most to the team’s success each month. Seagate Technology will donate $2,500 on behalf of the player(s) to The Sharks Foundation. In addition, one player will be selected as the Seagate Technology “Sharks Player of the Year” at the conclusion of the season, and Seagate Technology will donate $5,000 on his behalf to The Sharks Foundation. Seagate Technology has donated more than $180,000 to The Sharks Foundation since the program's inception.
