The San Jose Sharks are preparing for the 17th NHL Entry Draft in team history, which will begin Friday, June 22. at 4:00 p.m. (all times Pacific) from Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH. The first round will be broadcast live on VERSUS. Rounds 2 thru 7 will be held on Saturday, June 23 beginning at 7:00 a.m.

The Sharks currently hold eight selections in the seven-round draft, starting in the second round at 41st overall.  Although the team does not currently hold a first round selection in this year’s draft, Sharks Director of Scouting Tim Burke and his staff have an impressive recent track record of mining the second round for talent, including:
  • Marc-Edouard Vlasic, 2005 (35th overall)
  • Matt Carle, 2003 (47th overall)
  • Jonathan Cheechoo, 1998 (29th overall)

San Jose traded their first round selection (22nd overall) to Montreal, along with D Josh Gorges in exchange for D Craig Rivet and a fifth round selection in 2008, Feb. 25, 2007.

San Jose traded a first round selection (26th overall, previously acquired from New Jersey along with D Vladamir Malakhov in exchange for D Jim Fahey and RW Alexander Korolyuk), along with LW Ville Nieminen and RW Jay Barriball to St. Louis in exchange for RW Bill Guerin, Feb. 27, 2007.

San Jose traded their second round selection (53rd overall), along with third round (85th overall) and fourth round (113th overall) selections in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft to Columbus in exchange for a second round selection (36th overall, Jamie McGinn) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
