Hockey Fights Cancer Month

Sharks Help Spread Awareness through League-Wide Initiative

The San Jose Sharks are honored to implement several initiatives to enhance the NHL’s “Hockey Fights Cancer” Month. Throughout October and into November, the Sharks are hosting local cancer related organizations, honoring cancer patients, raising funds for various charities and of course, increasing overall awareness for hockey’s biggest fight.

On Saturday, October 25, the San Jose Sharks official Hockey Fights Cancer Day took place at SAP Center. Four lavender Hockey Fights Cancer corner boards set the stage for players to take the ice during pre-game warm-ups wearing commemorative Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys complete with a Hockey Fights Cancer patch. These jerseys will be signed by its respective player and sold via blind auction at the Sharks Foundation booth during home games on November 1 and November 6. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Please read below for more information regarding the jersey auction.

Fans at home were also made aware of Hockey Fights Cancer Day, as coaches, broadcasters and Sharks front office staff donned official Hockey Fights Cancer pins and lavender-colored apparel. If fans are interested in purchasing any Hockey Fights Cancer merchandise, the Sharks Store is selling limited edition ties, hats, shirts and scarves until supplies last. These items can be purchased online by clicking here.

While the players and staff displayed their support Saturday, fans were welcomed to take action during the game too. As fans entered the building, everyone received a Hockey Fights Cancer support card and was invited to write on the cards by completing the sentence “I Fight For”. Fans were then instructed to hold up their cards during the second period, while observing a moment of silence. View our photo album of fans who took part in this special moment here. Fans also had the opportunity to take advantage of a special Hockey Fights Cancer ticket promotion which designated $5 of the ticket proceeds to benefit ZERO- The End of Prostate Cancer, a NHL charitable partner.

Saturday was also a welcomed day of stress-free entertainment for 28 special fans, as they watched the Sharks game from a donated suite. These individuals were cancer patients from Kaiser Permanente and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. At the conclusion of the game those guests from the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society shared a once-in-a-lifetime experience when they met more than half of the Sharks roster to take photos, sign autographs and share a handshake. The Sharks Foundation is hosting a different local cancer-related organization on the concourse during home games through November 17. These organizations include: Delete Blood Cancer, Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, A Survivor at Every Rink and Zero: The End of Prostate Cancer. The Sharks Foundation will also distribute Hockey Fights Cancer buttons to fans who make monetary donations in any amount at the Sharks Foundation booth located on the Concourse level near Section 118. Fans may donate online to the NHL’s charitable partners by clicking here.

Thanks to the NHL, the San Jose Sharks split a $5,000 donation between two organizations, the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and Movember. To enhance the partnership with Movember, a ticket promotion was offered to fans to benefit Movember. Any fan who took advantage of this promotion will receive a special pair of sunglasses with a hanging mustache on November 1. Several of the Sharks players have been heavily involved in Movember, including Mike Brown, Logan Couture and James Sheppard. These players will lead the entire team throughout “Movember,” where fans can donate to players’ mustaches or “Mos”.

To start Movember off with a “buzz,” Sharks defenseman Brent Burns is again hosting “Burnzie’s Buzzcut.” This charitable event started in 2013 as an idea by Burns and his wife Susan to raise money for causes close to their hearts. By the end of the campaign, Sharks fans across the country donated more than $24,000. This year, Burns is joined by teammates Barclay Goodrow, Scott Hannan, Mirco Mueller, Joe Pavelski, Sheppard and Chris Tierney. Donations will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on November 1 and will benefit Defending the Blue Line, the Katie Moore Foundation and the San Francisco Zoo. Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys will be sold during games on Saturday, November 1 and Thursday, November 6. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Fans must complete a bid form for their desired jersey, stating the amount they will pay, without seeing any other bids for that item. Each item has its own bid form and box. Only forms completed in their entirety and placed in the correct box will be eligible. The auction will close at the end of the FIRST INTERMISSION. The individual who has stated the highest bid for each jersey will then be deemed the winner. Winners will be displayed at The Sharks Foundation Booth at the beginning of the SECOND INTERMISSION. Each set of bid forms is sequentially numbered. In the event of a tie, the individual who made the earliest bid of the night will be deemed the winner.
