Before Game 2, let’s take a closer look at the GAME INSIDE THE GAME for the Sharks and the Vancouver Canucks!
Lineup changes for Game 2?
San Jose: Martin Havlat left after the first period of play in Game 1 with an undisclosed injury. James Sheppard played on the 4th line in place of Scott Gomez in Game 1. No announcement of any changes yet for Game 2 on Friday.
Vancouver: no injuries reported for the Vancouver after Game 1, however there is still a question on the health of goaltender Cory Schneider who missed Game 1 due to a “body” injury.
Bounces going San Jose’s Way
The Sharks played a complete game to take a 1-0 series lead over Vancouver. With both teams expecting a long series it is important to note that Raffi Torres (6 hits) and Tommy Wingels (5 hits) led the way physically for the Sharks to set the tone which led to some hard working bounces going the Sharks way…. including the game winning goal by Dan Boyle midway through the 3rd period.
Did you Know?
*Visions of 1995?.... the Sharks have not gone ahead 2-0 in a series that started on the road since winning Game 1 and 2 at the Saddledome in Calgary in 1995. San Jose took Game 1 5-4 with Jamie Baker grabbing the game winner followed by a 5-4OTW in Game 2 on May 9, 1995 on an Ulf Dahlen game winner at 12:21 in OT. The Sharks went on to win that series 4-3.
*Road Winners… the Sharks were the first team in the Stanley Cup playoffs to win on the road. After the first two days, the home teams had a 5-1 record.
*Lot’s of ice…Marc-Edouard Vlasic led all San Jose skaters in Game 1 with 23:21 worth of ice time while
Alexander Edler led the Canucks with 27:50 of ice time.
*53 and counting…. Patrick Marleau scored his franchise leading 53rd playoff goal in Game 1 on Wednesday. Joe Pavelski is 2nd with 20 goals.
The Bottom Line:
The Sharks played a fantastic road game with terrific goaltending by Antti Niemi and timely goal scoring. Look for the Sharks to pick it up a gear in Game 2 as they are in great position to take a 2-0 series lead before heading home to San Jose. The Canucks had strong goaltending as well with Roberto Luongo making 25 saves in goal but San Jose played like a team that wanted to win Game 1 ( SJ won 40 of 70 face-offs, blocked 15 shots to Vancouver’s 11, and only has two giveaways the entire game (Vancouver had 8)). If the Sharks put forth the same effort in Game 2…. they will be in good shape!
One last thing… Antti Niemi lists his hockey idol as Arturs Irbe. It was Arturs Irbe in goal for the San Jose Sharks in their last two game road sweep to kick off a playoff series on the road in Calgary in 1995.
