The volunteers at Loaves & Fishes Family Kitchen are used to preparing fish and other meat for dinner, but what happens when this fish is the one doing the preparation?
That question was answered on Monday, June 19, when S.J. Sharkie and members of the San Jose Sharks staff visited St. Patrick’s Church to present Loaves & Fishes with a Sharks Foundation grant in the amount of $20,000. The funding supports their hot meals and food basket programs, and allows for a Community Services Coordinator who will insure that families are not only provided food, but also provided extensive information and referral services to housing, health, emergency and child care resources.
“We’re very thankful for all the support of The Sharks Foundation and the San Jose Sharks,” said interim Executive Director Andrés Garces, “It further cements our working relationships, and our willingness to continue serving those who are in need the most. This grant ensures that Loaves & Fishes will continue to fight hunger and poor nutrition in the capital of Silicon Valley.”
Loaves & Fishes was founded in 1980 to help meet the needs of our community's
families and seniors. For more than 25 years, its mission has been to provide nutritious meals and support services in a dignified, safe and caring environment. The first meal, held on February 15, 1980, served just 26 guests, but since then the organization has continuously expanded its outreach.
Today, Loaves & Fishes averages 180 guests per meal distributed and assists more than 3,000 people annually. Meals are served Saturdays, Mondays and Thursdays at St. Patrick’s kitchen and Wednesdays and Fridays at St. Maria Goretti’s kitchen. In addition, prepared food is delivered once a week to InnVision’s Cecil White Center, a homeless program adjacent to the Montgomery Street Inn in downtown San Jose.
“Too many folks in this area are struggling to provide for their families,” said Laura Johnston, Sharks Foundation Manager, “The San Jose Sharks and The Sharks Foundation are honored to help Loaves & Fishes make their lives a little easier.”
Presenting the check with Sharkie and Johnston were Sharks Senior Director of Communications Ken Arnold and Public Relations Manager and The Sharks Foundation board member Jim Sparaco.
