Fitness Faceoff Celebrates Healthy Living

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

The Sharks Foundation’s mission of healthy living was spread throughout San Jose on Sunday, June 28, as nearly 2,200 fans walked, ran or rode more than a combined 15,000 miles as part of the third annual Fitness Faceoff presented by Kaiser Permanente.

It was hard to miss the sea of teal that reached as far as the Saratoga Hills for the 50-mile Bowlmor Bike Ride or throughout downtown San Jose where the scenic 5K and 10K route took walkers and runners around the iconic fountains of Cesar Chavez Park. The event also gave cyclists an opportunity to hit the pavement for a 20-mile Bowlmor Bike Ride. As far as the race took its participants, however, they all started and finished together at the home of the Sharks- SAP Center.

As soon as the sun rose, the first wave of cyclists lined up and prepared themselves for the grueling 50-mile Bowlmor Bike course that lay ahead. Sharks alum Owen Nolan, who participated in the trek, also offered words of encouragement. Just more than an hour later Sharks broadcaster Randy Hahn greeted runners on stage, while the Dailey Method warmed them up for the start of the 10K. The 5K and 20-mile bike ride began soon after.

Sharks PA Announcer Danny Miller helped lead the welcome committee along with hundreds of volunteers, who passed out the prized Sharks-themed finisher’s medals when participants began to trickle in. Runners, walkers and cyclists, along with their friends, family and other patrons, visited the Health Festival presented by Kaiser Permanente, after crossing the finish line and were re-fueled with bananas from Whole Foods, KIND bars and Harvest Snaps before being greeted by a DJ and more than 40 health and wellness vendors at the Arena Green.

In between the Dailey Method cool down, games and prizes given away by the Health Festival DJ, Miller led the award ceremony where: Ahmet Gokcek, Albert Pham and Anthony Hudson and Anne Pogue, Kirsten Dutton and Lidia Santos led the way for the male and female 5K runners, respectively, while Logan Coe, Brian Collett and Casey Roche and Megan Lareau, Aleksandra Gradinarova and Joyce Lee finished first, second and third overall for the male and female 10K runners, respectively.

With children and their families being an important piece of the Foundation’s mission, kids had the opportunity to maneuver an inflatable obstacle course and rock wall, construct whatever they put their mind to with the Children Discovery Museum’s Imagination Play Blocks, have their face painted, as well as participate in fitness friendly activities with Kaiser Permanente’s Educational Theatre at the Health Festival. Any youth who signed up for the Rosendin Electric Kids Fun Run also received a Fitness Faceoff shirt, ran the entire perimeter of SAP Center and were even awarded a finisher’s medal.

By the early afternoon the all participants completed their mission and for the third straight year Fitness Faceoff presented by Kaiser Permanente was deemed a success. Funds raised by the Sharks Foundation will be dispersed back out into the Santa Clara community through its various program and its grant recipients.

The Sharks Foundation would like to acknowledge and thank the 2015 Fitness Faceoff presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, the Platinum, Ride sponsor Bowlmor Lanes, the Gold, Kid’s Fun Run sponsor Rosendin Electric, and Gold sponsor, The Color Run.
