Day To Help Sharks Charities

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks
For the San Jose Sharks, Monday was a day for a little relaxation and a chance to raise funds for the Sharks Foundation. The Annual Applied Materials Sharks Foundation Golf Classic took place at Cinnabar Hills in San Jose and the players were able to take a day off from practice to raise money for the Foundation.

The golf tournament annually raises in the neighborhood of $100,000.

“It’s always good to do things for charity and raise some money,” said Jeremy Roenick. “It’s a beautiful thing that we can do this.”

“It’s fun getting out with everyone,” said Joe Pavelski.

As far as golfing talent, the Sharks roster ranges from Roenick, who held the lead at one point in the Tahoe Celebrity tournament, to strong players like Pavelski and Devin Setoguchi, to rookie golfers like Thomas Greiss.

“I’m the worst golfer,” said Greiss. “This is probably my third time playing and two were at Sharks tournaments. I could probably throw the ball further and be more precise. I can laugh about it. I think my first two to three swings, I didn’t hit the ball.”

Instead of worrying about his game, Greiss focused on the fun.

“The food is good and the company is great,” said Greiss, who was paired with Sharks Corporate partners from Porsche, a German made car. “I’d rather practice, but it’s good for the charity.”

The Applied Materials Sharks Foundation Golf Classic is just one of numerous ways the Sharks use the talents of their players to give back to the local community as millions of dollars have been reinvested back into San Jose since the Sharks began the foundation.

The Sharks who were healthy took time to play in the golf tournament.  Injured stars Jonathan Cheechoo and Evgeni Nabokov took the opportunity to get on the ice.  Both are still listed as day-to-day.

Igor Larionov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame Monday, with fans hoping to watch can log onto at 3:30 p.m. PST. Larionov is the first NHLer to have played for San Jose to be inducted into the Hall of Fame and he will forever be linked to the 1993-94 team that pulled off the miracle upset of top seeded Detroit in the postseason.

The Sharks will host Nashville Tuesday night at HP Pavilion in a 7:30 p.m. contest that will be available on CSN Bay Area, 98.5 KFOX and Tickets be found at and the HP Pavilion Ticket Office.
