Executive Vice President and General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that the San Jose Sharks have signed defenseman Matt Pelech to a one-year contract.
Pelech, 23, posted five points (three goals, two assists) with Abbotsford (AHL) in 59 games during 2010-11. He led the team with 198 penalty minutes, which ranked 14th amongst all AHL players.
The right-handed defenseman appeared in five NHL games for Calgary in 2008-09 and posted three assists and nine penalty minutes. In four AHL seasons with Quad City and Abbotsford, he has amassed 33 points (11 goals and 22 assists) and 594 penalty minutes in 237 regular season games. He has appeared in 13 Calder Cup Playoff games, all in 2009-10 with Abbotsford, posting four assists and 31 penalty minutes.
The 6-foot-3, 220-pound native of Toronto was originally selected by Calgary in the first round (26th overall) of the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
