Charity Bass Fishing Tournament Raises Over $5,800

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

Since retiring from the NHL last year, former Sharks captain Owen Nolan has made it a priority to stay involved with the Sharks organization while continuing to give back to the community. On just about any game night at SAP Center, Nolan can be found working his way around the Shark Tank meeting with corporate partners, visiting suite holders, and saying hello to Sharks season ticket holders who remember his playing days fondly.

On non-game days, Owen can be found out on the lake enjoying his other passion, fishing. And once again, Nolan has been lucky enough to turn that passion into a career, taking his knowledge and love for fishing and turning it into a hit TV series known as Sportsman 360TV which airs locally on Comcast Sports Net.

So it came as no surprise when Owen approached the Sharks Foundation late last year about taking two of his passions, fishing and hockey, and putting the two together to create a new and exciting way to raise funds for the community. With assistance from his friend Randy Pringle of Best Bass Tournaments, and a few of his friends in the community as sponsors, Owen initiated the first-ever Sportsman 360 Charity Bass Fishing Tournament to benefit the Sharks Foundation.

On Sunday, Apr. 13, more than 50 boats launched from Russo's Marina in Bethel Island for a day of friendly fishing competition to benefit a good cause, the Sharks Foundation. The anglers went out in boats of two anglers each and fished for major prizes which included Sharks signed memorabilia, a suite night to a Sharks game for next season, as well as big fish cash. This event was also filmed for an episode of the Sportsman 360TV show. Additionally, the anglers enjoyed free BBQ from Britannia Arms once the tournament was over.

At the end of the tournament, the Sportsman 360 Charity Bass Fishing Tournament raised more than $5,800 for the Sharks Foundation. And more importantly, a good time was had by all who participated.

"We really had a lot of fun out there today," said Nolan. "It's not often that you can go out and spend the day doing something that you really love and are very passionate about while still raising money for a great cause like the Sharks Foundation. We're all proud of the work we accomplished and hope that we can continue to build off the success that we had today to make this event even bigger and better next year."
