by San Jose Sharks @sanjosesharks /

SAN JOSE - The San Jose Sharks (@SanJoseSharks) announced today that Brent Burns (@Burnzie88) is the winner of the 2018-19 Xactly Inspired Performance "Three Stars of the Year" award. Burns will be honored with an award from Xactly, a leader in sales performance management, in an on-ice presentation following tonight's game against the Colorado Avalanche at SAP Center at San Jose (@SAPCenter). On behalf of the winner, Xactly will donate $5,000 to the Sharks Foundation.

Burns has registered 79 points (14 goals, 65 assists) in 80 games this season, setting a single-season career-high in assists and points. He ranks fifth in the NHL in assists, sixth in takeaways (85), and leads both NHL blueliners and the Sharks in points and assists.

Burns has the third longest games played streak in San Jose history (behind Patrick Marleau and Sharks captain Joe Pavelski) with 469 consecutive games played, and holds the Sharks all-time franchise record for most goals, assists, and points among defensemen.

The blueliner scored his 14th career overtime goal on Mar. 30 vs. the Vegas Golden Knights, passing Scott Niedermayer for the most in NHL history by a defenseman. On Mar. 7 vs. Montreal, Burns also became the first defenseman in Sharks franchise history to register at least 60 assists in a single-season.

In December, Burns was the 328th player in NHL history to reach the 1,000 NHL games milestone and one of only 29 active NHL players to have played in as many games. He joined Zdeno Chara as one of just two active defensemen to reach 600 career points, and posted a career high nine-game point streak from Oct. 9 to Oct. 30, scoring three goals and collecting 11 assists to set a franchise-best mark by a Sharks defenseman.

Since joining the NHL in the 2003-04 season with the Minnesota Wild, Burns has annually ranked amongst the League's top blueliners. No NHL defenseman during that span has accrued more than Burns' 645 points (196 goals, 449 assists) in 1,041 NHL games. He was named to his sixth NHL All-Star Game this season (2011, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019).

The six-foot-five, 230-pound native of Barrie, Ontario was originally selected by Minnesota in the first round (20th overall) of the 2003 NHL Draft. He was acquired by San Jose from Minnesota on June 24, 2011.

The Sharks "Xactly Inspired Performance Three Stars of the Year" Award winner is tabulated by the number of times a player is named a "star" of the game.  At the end of each regular season game, players received five points for being chosen first star, three points for second star and one point for third star as listed on the official NHL game sheet. Each star is chosen by members of the media based on the player's performance each game.
