SAN JOSE, California
— The San Jose Sharks announced today that forward Joe Pavelski
and defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic
have been selected as the Brocade “Sharks co-Players of the Month” for the month of October. It is the first time that co-winners have been selected for the award since Oct. 1999 when Owen Nolan and Steve Shields shared the honors. The award will be presented to both players prior to tonight’s game against the Nashville Predators.
Pavelski, 26, led the Sharks in goals (8), power play goals (3) and points (8-5=13), was tied for first in shots (35) and tied for second in plus/minus (+6). Playing in all situations, he finished tied for fifth amongst all League forwards in time on ice per game, leading the team’s forwards, averaging 21:42 of ice time per game. Pavelski ended the month by gaining at least one point in every game of the Sharks six-game road trip (6-5=11) in which the team finished 5-1-0.
Vlasic, 24, led the team in plus/minus (+7), which was tied for third in the NHL for the month of October. The six-year veteran was even or plus in all ten games on the month and he finished October with an assist in the last two games. In total, he compiled three points (1-2=3), two penalty minutes and 13 blocked shots on the month and was tremendously effective in the defensive zone.
This is the first Brocade “Sharks Player of the Month” Award for both players.
Established in the 1996-97 season, the Brocade “Sharks Player of the Month” program honors the Sharks player(s) who have contributed most to the team’s success each month. Brocade will donate $2,500 on behalf of the player(s) to The Sharks Foundation. In addition, one player will be selected as the Brocade “Sharks Player of the Year” at the conclusion of the season and Brocade will donate $5,000 on his behalf to The Sharks Foundation. The Sharks Player of the Month and Year award program has donated more than $300,000 to The Sharks Foundation since the program's inception.
