Beard-A-Thon Raises Over $20,000

by San Jose Sharks Staff / San Jose Sharks
SAN JOSE – Through three rounds of the 2011 Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Sharks Foundation raised more than $20,000 through the Beard-A-Thon campaign. This amount more than doubles the amount raised in last year’s Beard-A-Thon.

The Beard-A-Thon fundraiser takes advantage of the great hockey tradition of growing a playoff beard for the duration of a post season run. Fans, friends, and family members are encouraged to pledge their favorite players and loved ones, with proceeds of the Sharks Beard-A-Thon benefiting the Sharks Foundation.

This post-season’s largest grossing beard grower from the Sharks Beard-A-Thon campaign was Sharks mascot S.J. Sharkie. The beloved mascot raised over $2,500 through fans pledging his beard growth. Not far behind Sharkie were Sharks forwards Logan Couture and Devin Setoguchi, who each raised over $1,000 a piece while they grew their beards for the playoffs.

In total, more than 600 people participated in this year’s Beard-A-Thon by either growing a beard to raise money or logging online to donate to the cause.

The Sharks Foundation would like to thank all those who took part in the fundraiser and donated in support of local youth and families in our community.

The Sharks Foundation is dedicated to enhancing the lives of youth and families in our community with an emphasis in the areas of Education, Health and Safety, and Character Development. The Sharks Foundation supplies emergency aid when appropriate, executes unique and relevant programming, supports the advancement of youth hockey and provides financial support and resources to organizations that enrich the lives of those in need.

The Sharks Foundation positively impacts the community in two ways (1) implements effective programming that changes the lives of youth and families and (2) raises funds and redistributes the money back into the community.

This year alone, our literacy program has helped more than 22,000 students learn about the importance of reading. During the 2010-11 season, the Sharks Foundation contributed nearly $400,000 to non-profit organizations supporting youth. Of this amount, $272,121 was donated through our annual grant process and an additional $100,000+ was distributed through our collection drives and special fundraisers. Since its inception, the Sharks Foundation has donated more than $5.2 million.

The San Jose Sharks are deeply involved with their neighborhood. As role models, we are committed to giving back to the community that so strongly supports us.
