After a successful junior career, Demers was selected by the Sharks in the seventh round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. A year later he made his NHL debut on October 1, 2009 against the Colorado Avalanche after making it through the final round of roster cuts in training camp.

Two days later, Demers asserted himself as part of a core of young players the Sharks future success will hinge on. Demers recorded his first career NHL point with his assist in a play that also featured the first career points by young forwards Benn Ferriero (goal) and Frazer McLaren (assist). In his rookie season, Demers skated in 51 games and posted 21 points. He was named the Playstation “Sharks Rookie of the Year” in a vote by Bay Area media.

This season, Demers has played in 20 games after missing six due to injury. He remains in a tie for second among Sharks defensemen in points with five helpers on the season.
