SAN JOSE, California - The San Jose Sharks announced today that goaltender Antti Niemi is the winner of the 2012-13 PlayStation® "Three Stars of the Game" award. Niemi will be honored with an award from PlayStation, in a presentation that will follow tonight's game against the Dallas Stars at HP Pavilion at San Jose. On behalf of the winner, Sony Computer Entertainment America will present a check for $2,500 to the Sharks Foundation and Niemi will receive a PlayStation®3 (PS3™) system with a VIP pack of games.
Entering play tonight, Niemi is tied for first in the NHL in wins (23), T-7th in save percentage, T-10th in goals-against average (2.14) and T-4th in shutouts (4).
He posted a seven-game winning streak March 30 thru April 5, one-game shy of his career-high and also won six consecutive starts from Jan. 20 thru Jan. 31
Niemi was named the Brocade "Sharks Player of the Month" for Jan/Feb. 2013 when he was is 3rd in the NHL in goals-against average (1.83), 4th in save percentage (.934), and T-6th in wins (9). He allowed two or less goals in 12 of his 17 games during that span.
The six-foot two netminder was also named the 2012-13 Brocade "Sharks Player of the Year" and the Brocade "Sharks Player of the Month" for January-February 2013.
Niemi, a native of Vantaa, Finland, was originally signed by San Jose as a free agent on Sept. 2, 2010.
At the end of each 2012-13 regular season game, players received five points for being chosen first star, three points for second star and one point for third star as listed on the official NHL game sheet distributed by the game's official scorekeepers. Each star is chosen by members of the media based on the player's performance each game.
