Annual Literacy Events Reward Students &Teachers

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

A group of students and teachers from Reading Is Cool presented by Comerica Bank were reminded of the rewards of reading when they attended the Sharks Foundation’s annual “All-Star Reader” and Teacher Appreciation events at the San Jose Sharks vs. Dallas Stars game on Sunday, April 7.

The students, nominated by their teachers for their impressive reading achievements, had a particularly memorable afternoon. Upon arriving in their penthouse suite, they were escorted downstairs to greet San Jose Sharks players before puck-drop. Extending their arms as far as they could reach, the students fist-pumped and high-fived nearly every athlete who strode through the Shark Head.

The children were later greeted by Comerica Bank’s Western Market President Michael Fulton and mascot S.J. Sharkie and featured in an on-ice ceremony in which each student was individually recognized for his or her impressive performance in the classroom.

As Fulton commented following the event, “We have really enjoyed being a partner in the ‘Reading is Cool’ program because we know how important it is for children to develop a love of reading. Bringing together fans, players and books is a winning combination!”

For many of the students and teachers, the afternoon served as their first professional hockey experience.

The Sharks Foundation and Comerica Bank are proud to host the 1,100 classrooms and over 30,000 students involved in Reading Is Cool presented by Comerica Bank this year and applaud the individuals who have excelled in the program.
