SAN JOSE, California – Sharks Sports & Entertainment’s Sharks Ice family of ice rink facilities will host the 2013 USA Hockey Girls’ and Women’s National Championships. The Girls Tier I and Tier II tournaments will be played at Sharks Ice at San Jose from, April 3-7, 2013 while the women’s tournament will be contested from April 4-7, 2013 at Oakland Ice Center operated by Sharks Ice with overflow games from all three tournaments to be held at Sharks Ice at Fremont.

The tournaments will feature USA Hockey District champions from across the country. Teams are composed of the best-of-the-best female hockey players in the United States, including past and present Olympians at the women’s level. At the girls level in both Tier I & II, there are four divisions: 12U, 14U, 16U, and 19U. The women’s tournament is split into A, B, and C divisions. Every year, each girls level features 12 competing teams - one team representing each of the 12 USA Hockey Districts – for a grand total of 96 girls teams. The women’s tournament varies in number of participating teams and in 2012 there were a total of 31 teams, eight in the A Division, 12 in the B Division, and 11 in the C Division.

“The Jr. Sharks are extremely excited about bringing the best girls and women hockey players from around the country to California to compete for the National Championship. Our parents, volunteers, and staff have been working hard to make sure that this is the best experience possible for the participating players and their families,” said Jr. Sharks President Tony Zasowski.

Sharks Ice has hosted four USA Hockey National Tournaments in the past, including the 2007 Girls’ and Women’s USA Hockey Championships. The most recent tournament was in 2011, when the nation’s best PeeWee AA teams skated into San Jose for their USA Hockey Tier II 12-and-under National Championships. The tournament drew thousands of participants, family, friends, and spectators and was a big economic boom for the city of San Jose creating thousands of room-nights and business for local hotels and restaurants. For the 2013 USA Hockey Girls & Women’s National Championships, Sharks Ice expects to host 104-plus teams.

Sharks Sports & Entertainment’s Sharks Ice at San Jose, with four NHL-sized rinks under one roof, is the largest ice sports facility west of the Mississippi and one of the few facilities in the United States capable of hosting such an event. In total, USA Hockey will have seven ice sheets available for the tournaments with an additional two ice sheets (one Olympic and one NHL surface) at Oakland Ice Center Operated by Sharks Ice and one NHL surface at Sharks Ice at Fremont.
