2010 Shark For a Day Fantasy Camp

by Staff Writer / San Jose Sharks

Once the lights go off and Metallica’s “Seek and Destroy” starts playing over the sound system inside HP Pavilion, it’s easy to guess what comes next. When the Shark head is lowered and its red eyes are glowing, the fans inside The Tank begin to cheer for the Sharks players who skate out of the smoky Sharks head. One at a time, the players circle the ice in preparation for the game they’re about to play.

This familiar scene took place on March 27,but it was for a different set of Sharks. This typical pregame sight was the annual “Shark for a Day” Fantasy Camp, where 34 Sharks fans participated in a fundraiser for the Sharks Foundation and got the chance to play in a game with famous alumni at The Tank.

Former Sharks Jamie Baker, Dave Maley, Jeff Odgers, Bernie Nicholls and Doug Bodger, along with former National Hockey League defenseman and current CSN California Hockey Analyst Bret Hedican, were present to help coach and skate with the participants.

Each player paid a $1,900 registration fee in order to participate and received their own authentic customized Sharks sweater and gear. All of the proceeds from the registration, as well as from a silent auction for the participants, benefited the Sharks Foundation.

The players enjoyed a packed day complete with a morning skate, a tour of HP Pavilion and Sharks Ice, an informational health clinic with Sharks Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Mike Potenza, a catered pregame meal and of course the fantasy game.

The game was an exciting battle between Baker’s Team Teal and Maley’s Team White. After the first 60 minutes and overtime, the teams were tied at 8-8 until the game ended in a thrilling shootout, with Teal capturing the win, 9-8.

After the game, the participants took a charter bus to Sharks Ice at San Jose, where they enjoyed another meal, this time at Stanley’s.

To finish off their fun-filled day, the registrants got to enjoy the Sharks take on the Vancouver Canucks in the Penthouse Plaza. With a catered meal and the insightful commentary from the alumni, the participants witnessed the Sharks 4-2 win over the Canucks.

The Fantasy Camp event was fun for all involved and even helped the Sharks Foundation raise more than $30,000.
