Scouting Report

“Puljujarvi is the ultimate power forward package. He is a big, mobile, highly skilled, well-rounded winger who is both a scorer and a playmaker. He is a powerful skater with excellent offensive instincts, puck skills and determination.” - Dan Marr, Director of NHL Central Scouting

"Puljujarvi is a big, mobile, skilled, all-around winger who can score and pass. He's got excellent skating power, plays with determination, wins most battles. He plays with confidence and has all the tools needed to become a star, including the size, skill, speed and will power." - Goran Stubb, NHL Director of European Scouting

"Puljujarvi has been a dream for scouts this season on his way to cashing in as a top pick who has it all: size, speed, work rate, vision/playmaking, and cardiovascular engine. Finishing off all of these desirables with a competitive personality who wants to play as much as he can, you can’t replicate a skilled PF like Puljujarvi. Puljujarvi has great flow manipulation feeding off the movement of his linemates/opposition, positioning himself for opportunity. His skating is NHL grade right now, and often closed off opponents in possession on lateral distance plays most won’t even attempt. His best offensive attribute is his sight for the pass in any condition, be it mauled, jammed up, or free in space. He’s not a handsy playmaker, but his ability to feed others is special and very NHL compatible. His shot can improve, but is sneaky successful because of his deceiving wind up that doesn’t always connect and throws goalies off. Puljujarvi might just be one of the most historic third wheel’s in the history of the draft with massive upside extending past draft day." - Anthony Mauro, DraftBuzz Hockey

  • Puljujarvi spent the entire 2015-16 season with Karpat of the Finnish Elite League, where he has registered 13-15—28 in 50 regular season games and 4-5—9 in 10 postseason contests.
  • On home soil at the 2016 World Junior Championship in Helsinki, Puljujarvi led Finland to a gold medal while playing on a dynamic line with Patrik Laine (No. 2 ranked European Skater) and Sebastian Aho (drafted 35th overall by CAR in 2015).
  • Puljujarvi (5-12—17 in 7 GP) led all players at the 2016 World Junior Championship in assists and points en route to gold, collecting Most Valuable Player, Best Forward and All-Star Team honors.
  • Internationally, Puljujarvi also earned gold at the 2016 Under-18 World Championship (5-2—7 in 4 GP), scoring a hat trick in the gold medal game against rival Sweden and a silver medal with Finland at the 2015 Under-18 World Championship (2-5—7 in 7 GP).
  • A regular on successful teams, in 2014-15 Puljujarvi played 21 games with Karpat (4 7—11), who eventually went on to win the Finnish Elite League Championship, and spent 15 games with Hokki (8-5—13), who earned bronze in Finland’s second division. He also was a member of Karpat’s silver medal junior squad in 2013-14, racking up seven goals in 12 postseason contests.
