KITCHENER – A pair of second-period goals allowed the Pittsburgh Penguins to dump the Ottawa Senators 3-1 on Monday afternoon in the final game of their rookie tournament.
The Senators prospects finished the four-team event with a 2-1-0 record after earlier victories over the Florida Panthers 4-2 and Toronto Maple Leafs 7-5.
Monday at the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium complex, Jason Legault and Casey Lalonde-Zabotel beat Sens goaltender Brian Elliott in the second period to break a scoreless tie.
Jim O’Brien got Ottawa on the scoreboard in the third period, beating Penguins goaltender Patrick Killeen after a dazzling solo rush up the ice. O’Brien took an outlet pass from Alexander Nikulin and deked a Penguins defenceman before wiring a slap shot past Killeen.
A minute later, Dustin Jeffrey restored Pittsburgh’s two-goal lead by striking on the power play.
The Penguins finished with a 29-26 edge in shots on goal.
