The Ottawa Senators concluded its four-game road trip with a 4-2 defeat to the Los Angeles Kings Saturday night at Staples Center.

Filip Gustavsson stopped 33 shots in the Ottawa (4-14-1) net while Michael Del Zotto and Connor Brown scored. Cal Peterson stopped 30 shots for the Kings (9-8-3) as Carl Grundstrom (2), Victor Arvidsson and Arthur Kaliyev had goals.
"We tried our hearts out," Senators head coach D.J. Smith said. "We got we wanted in the third period with the five minute major but with the game on the line, we've got to find a way to score. We just didn't generate enough. That's a situation in which we've got to get it done."
Trailing 3-2 in the third, Ottawa had a glorious opportunity with 6:09 to play when they were awarded a five-minute power play after Brendan Lemieux bit Brady Tkachuk on the left hand in a post-whistle scuffle.
"I think that is the most gutless thing anybody could ever do," Tkachuk said. "I can't really wrap my head around it. It's outrageous."
However, the Senators couldn't capitalize before Grundstrom scored into the empty-net in the final minute.
"For us as a group, if we want to take the next step, that's one that we've got to look at," Chabot said. "They did a good job of cutting off and blocking shots and we stuck to our plan. We obviously had a few looks."
The Kings opened the scoring at 4:59 of the first as Anze Kopitar's pass was on-point to Arvidsson who just had to redirect the puck past Gustavsson on the power play for his fourth of the campaign.
Connor Brown had a great opportunity to tie the game midway through the period as he broke out on a 2-on-0 shorthanded breakaway with Nick Holden but couldn't slide the puck under Peterson. But, after some sustained pressure towards the end of the period, the Senators got a late equalizer through Del Zotto whose point shot hit the stick of Alex Iafallo and beat Peterson as the d-man scored his second of the year with 18.6 seconds left in the frame.
Grundstrom gave the hosts a 2-1 lead at 10:23 of the second as the puck slid into the net as he was making contact with Gustavsson before Kaliyev pushed the lead to two goals as Alex Edler found him back door with a pass from the left circle at 13:14.
"The rule is when you push a guy into your goalie it's not interference and clearly Sanford pushed him in," Smith said on why he didn't challenge the Grundstrom play. "The refs saw that and we were fairly certain that would stand as a goal and then it would end up being a power play if we're wrong. I think if you asked Sanford, he'd admit that he shoved him in."
The Sens cut the deficit to one after 40 courtesy of Brown who gathered the puck after a kick pad save by Gustavsson off of Iafallo and flew down the right wing before beating Peterson low for his fourth of the season at 18:33.
"With the pads I have, they have a big kick, and I want to keep the puck on the same side that it hits the pad from that far out," Gustavsson said. "Some of the L.A. players missed the puck and Connor kind of got a breakaway."
