Senators owner Eugene Melnyk:
“It is certainly a very disappointing and difficult day for our team and our city – and one I would never have anticipated,” said Senators owner Eugene Melnyk.
“Daniel has accomplished so much as hockey player, as a community leader and as an inspiration to all of us. But what he has yet to accomplish is his dream of winning a Stanley Cup. I would have loved nothing more that to see him finish his career in Ottawa in front of all our great fans, but often in life one must put themselves first, ahead of others, and I respect Daniel and his family for making this difficult decision. I am confident our fans will be understanding and supportive.”
“I want to thank Daniel, Bibbi and their wonderful children Hugo, Loui, Fenix and William. Daniel will remain a big part of the fabric of our city and there will be a special place in Ottawa’s history reserved for him and his family."
“For our great fans, I want all of you to know my goal will never change. We are building a great team and I remain fully committed to bringing a championship to our team, to our fans and to our city.”
Senators general manager Bryan Murray:
“I had the opportunity to speak to Daniel last night at great length, at which time he informed me that his wishes were to move on from the Senators organization and to sign with a club he feels has a chance to win the Stanley Cup this season,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray.
“Daniel has accomplished a great deal as an Ottawa Senator, but we feel he has earned the right to make this decision and we support his desire to win a Cup. This was not a money decision; Daniel knows he is nearing the end of his career and he wanted to take this opportunity to move to a team he feels has a chance to win this season."
“I also think it is important for our fans to know that we will continue on our path to get better and more competitive each and every year. With the group of young players we have in Ottawa who are working with the one of the best coaching staffs in hockey and a fully committed owner in Mr. Melnyk, we are confident that our time will come.”
