OTTAWA - The American Hockey League has announced that Ottawa Senators forward prospect Josh Norris has been voted the winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the league's outstanding rookie for the 2019-20 season. The annual award is voted on by AHL players, coaches and members of the media in each of its 31 markets.
A native of Oxford, Mich., Norris, 21, led AHL rookies in scoring while tying for third among all AHL skaters with 61 points (31 goals, 30 assists) over 56 games with the Belleville Senators in 2019-20, where he was also the B-Sens' points' leader. A North Division AHL All-Star Classic addition in January, Norris was recognized as a member of the AHL First All-Star Team and the AHL All-Rookie Team for 2019-20 upon the conclusion of the campaign.
"On behalf of the entire organization, I want to express a profound congratulations to Josh Norris on winning the Red Garrett Memorial Award," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "Not only does this signify a testament to Josh's hard work, but having it voted upon by his peers is an additional accomplishment. With an outstanding combination of speed, skill and competitiveness every time he steps on the ice, Josh is a deserving winner of this prestigious award."
Recalled by Ottawa and to the NHL for the first time on Feb. 22, Norris made his Senators debut in the team's home game against Montreal that evening and ultimately skated in three NHL contests in 2019-20. Drafted in the first-round (19th overall) by the San Jose Sharks at the 2017 NHL Draft in Chicago, Norris was acquired by the Senators in the multi-asset trade that sent former captain Erik Karlsson to San Jose on 9/13/18. On 5/27/19, the Senators signed Norris to a three-year, entry-level contract.
