OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that the team has agreed to terms with forward Mathieu Joseph on a four-year, $11.8M contract extension. The contract has an average value of $2.95 million annually and includes the following breakdown: $2.5M in 2022-23, $2.7M in 2023-24, $3.3M in 2024-25 and $3.3M in 2025-26.

Joseph, 25, registered 12 points (four goals, eight assists) and six penalty minutes over 11 games with the Senators last season after being acquired in a trade with the Tampa Bay Lightning, in exchange for forward Nick Paul, on March 20. He concluded the season having established new NHL career highs in assists (18) and points (30) over 69 contests split between Tampa Bay and Ottawa. The campaign also saw him record the first hat-trick of his NHL career (in a contest in which he registered a career-high four points) in the Senators' 5-2 win at Detroit on April 1.
"Mathieu's addition made an immediate positive impact as someone who fit in well with our group," said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion. "He has high-end speed, a nose for the net and is responsible in his own end. He's long demonstrated good upside and is someone we're counting on to have another solid season both in 2022-23 and beyond."
A native of Laval, Que., Joseph will enter the 2022-23 season having skated in 232 contests (all but 11 of his which have occurred with the Lightning) for his NHL career over which he has recorded 82 points (41 goals, 41 assists) and 81 penalty minutes. Tampa Bay's first of two fourth-round draft picks (99th overall) in 2015, Joseph also skated in six post-season contests for the club in 2021 (registering two assists) in helping Tampa Bay win the Stanley Cup.
Internationally, Joseph has helped Canada earn two silver medals over the course of his career. He tallied five points (one goal, four assists) while a teammate of Senators defenceman Thomas Chabot at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and recorded one goal and one assist while skating in each of Canada's 10 contests at the 2019 World Championship in Slovakia.
