For the first time in weeks, the Ottawa Senators had their full roster skating at practice today at the Bell Sensplex in Ottawa. Defenceman Wade Redden, lower body, and centre Mike Fisher, foot, both returned to the ice after missing Wednesday's session with their respective injuries. Winger Peter Schaefer returned to action last week after missing four games while resting a hip-flexor injury.
Senators head coach Bryan Murray is glad to have his full team on the ice and has been impressed with his players' effort during the last two days.
"For two days the guys have been working real hard," Murray says. "To get all the bodies there, I feel that makes for a better practice."
Murray says he has left the decision up to Redden on when he wants to return to play in games. The Senators alternate captain has missed the past two.
"It's totally Wade's call. He'll probably tell us (if he can play on Saturday against the Carolina Hurricanes) after the skate tomorrow. The team needs that kind of player available to us but I don't want him to play until he's 100 per cent."
Redden is feeling better.
"It was good to be back on the ice again. (The injury) is getting better everyday," Redden says. "The time off helped. I've been working hard with Gerry (Townend, Senators head athletic therapist) and his staff to get healthy."
Murray said on Wednesday he expected Fisher, who suffered his foot injury while blocking a shot on Tuesday against the Montreal Canadiens, to be in the lineup on Saturday.
Gerber to face former team
Senators goaltender Martin Gerber will face his former Carolina Hurricanes teammates Saturday night at Scotiabank Place. Gerber downplayed the matchup against the team, with whom he shared a Stanley Cup victory last season.
"It's just a hockey game, anything can happen," Gerber says. "I don't think anyone has an advantage or anything. We had a great year last year but that was last year. This is a new situation. These are two real good teams, and we have to be ready."
