We caught up with Sens leading goal-scorer Mike Hoffman after the morning skate for a quick chat before the team hosts the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight at Canadian Tire Centre.
On if he's been in a shootout like last game that's gone that many rounds before:
I don't think I have. I think there was one in Binghamton that I just missed once I got called up. They went into a long one a couple of years ago. It's kind of funny I guess when you go through it. Both benches seemed to be laughing but I don't think the goalies are too happy. (laughs) "Will somebody just score already? How many saves do I have to make?". The goalies played well and they are obviously both good in a shootout so you have to give credit to them.
On if the lack of goals in the shootout was tied to players being too safe:
Oh for sure. Not everyone has the confidence to go out there try a move. Once it gets that late it's usually something fluky that wins it.
The Sens have the second highest winning percentage when scoring first. His thoughts on the importance of better starts:
I guess that stat is pretty impressive and maybe it should be brought up around here because I don't think too many guys know that. Obviously our start could be better. Everyone's trying as hard as we can. Maybe it's just something that's a little fluky or maybe we should pay a little more attention too so we can really bear down and focus a lot more and get off to better starts.
On getting the power play going again:
There are a number of things. Obviously, you have to have a good breakout, you have to have a good system in their zone, you have to move the puck around and at the end of the day you have to get pucks to the net because that's how you generate opportunities and score goals. I think it's just progress, working at it and everyone knows that's what it takes so it's just a matter of executing it.
On wearing the heritage jerseys for #ThrowbackThursday:
I like when we have a different jersey for sure. It's something different and these are nice. Our record is OK in it so hopefully it keeps going like that.
