We caught up with Sens defenseman Michael Kostka to get some quick pre-game thoughts ahead of tonight's match-up against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
On working his way back up to the NHL:
It's been great. It's been a bit of a long road back but the whole thing has been a bit of a long road so it's really nice to get back. Obviously, this is my goal to be here. I've been working a lot on my game to continue to round things out down there (Binghamton) and sometimes it's good to go through that. You fight some different battles when you're in the minors and I was really fortunate down there having Luke Richardson and Steve Stirling. Those guys are awesome. The work was put in there and now I'm happy to be back.
On getting back on track after the 2-game road trip:
I think the big thing is just putting together 60 minutes. It's so cliche and all that but really this team offensively can be so powerful. It's one of those things where if we can tighten things up defensively then the goals are always going to come. Putting together a 60 minute effort and making sure that defensively we're as tight as possible.
On the takeaway from yesterday's team meeting:
It's tough for me since I just got here so this is like the culmination of a lot of stuff that's gone on here that I haven't really been a part of but I think sometimes as the year goes on you get into the dog days. You're scratching and clawing for a playoff spot or whatever it is that you get so dialed in and focused on the hockey. Sometimes you just need a bit of perspective and to take a step back to realize what you're doing and the importance of the people in the room. I think that's something that we definitely honed in on yesterday.
On playing for the Sens tonight in the Battle of Ontario:
I love playing against teams I used to play on and now I've got a long laundry list of them (laughs). It's fun, there are still a few guys left over in Toronto. I always love playing against buddies, that usually gets me going. We're all competitive so as much as those guys were good friends once upon a time, you want to beat them whether it's a game of ping-pong or out here. I'm excited and I'm pumped up to play against them. It's the Battle of Ontario...I grew up watching this.
